Fencing

General fencing comes in basically 3 forms which is ranch style, panels and slat.

Out of these 3 fences the slat is by far the strongest and the panels are the weakest in our view. In high winds panels blow out and once blown out they are weakened.

Ranch style fences are where the boards run horizontally, they are an excellent step ladder for those people in your garden that should not be there.

Then there slat fencing which if installed properly will last a long time and hold out in most high winds.

Fencing

Installing fencing requires:

  • Pole holes need to be dug at 1.8 meters apart, posts installed at a depth of 600mm using some form of quick drying concrete. Fence posts should be 100mm x 100mm if you want them to last and should be pressure treated not sprayed. You can tell if they are pressure treated by the green tinge.
  • Once the poles are in place the rails should be set and these are 78mm x 38 pressure treated battens 3.6 long. Each section should have 3 rails set to hold the slats.
  • The slats are then fitted these are also pressure treated and are 1.8m x100mm x 18mm each board has 6 fixings. they are set at a board gap and this fence can be double sided to provide more privacy.
  • It can be left for 5 years without painting. This type of fence material can be used to make gates.
  • In terms of maintenance the paint you use must be specified fence paint, paints that are to heavy will likely warp the boards.
